A surface Analysis Of Garcinia Cambogia
Initial Response
My initial response to this Garcinia Cambogia advertisement, is that it's just another way for a person, or company to use the product as a get rich quick scam that promises extraordinary results! The reason I feel the way I do about weight loss supplements in general is that I have seen a very large amount of this type of Advertisements, and they hardly ever come anywhere near the level they are advertised. My intellectual response is, why should I spend the money for a product that most likely will not work? My emotional response is I see an easier way out then hard work and exercise, but even though this is what I see in reality I know there is more to weight loss then just taking a pill.
This fourth point asks me to identify places in the advertisement. What caught my eye is the fact this advertisement has is a white background. I feel that the reason for doing this is to draw more attention to the multiple colors, and logos on the box of pills and Dr. Oz. who is endorsing this product. This particular weight loss supplement is endorsed by Dr. Oz which makes the product much more popular and I do feel okay about using this product and that it will work to some extent. I have used this product on several different occasions, and found that it is definitely not what it is advertised to be. I do know that many health food and weight loss stores have been selling this supplement, for a long time, but it was not until Dr. Oz endorsed it on his show that it shot up in popularity, and started to highly increase its sales numbers.

Arguments and claims of this advertisement.
There are no specific assumptions based on beliefs or values. This is a natural product that based on these grounds has no confliction of either of the two things mentioned above. The results hinted in this advertisement, are if this pill is taken the rate of weight loss will be faster than any other product on the market. Beyond ownership of the product it claims that it will make them fit and happier, and like the advertisement said, “It will make you look like a celebrity.” For the person who is made aware of this product and make full usage of the product it will make them feel better and make them happier.

The Uses of Ethos,Pathos and Logos in this Advertisement
The one that I feel is the Most important factor, in this case is Pathos. One example we see is the fact that Dr. Oz is smiling, and one way or another this tells us that we will be just as happy as he is,And because of that we will have a stronger self confidence. In the middle bottom of this advertisement there is a statement that reads that the people who take this pill will “look like a celebrity.” This notion plays on our emotions in the sense that we are not good enough the way we are.And in order to be more appealing, and culturally accepted we will need to look like a billboard advertisement or a superstar.
This advertisement tells us that without the product we will not be as widely accepted. The secondary supporting factor for this advertisement is Ethos there are a couple examples. The first and most important is something that I also mentioned in the Pathos section. The fact that Dr. Oz is endorsing the product. It was because of his endorsement that the product flew off the shelves and became an overnight sensation. Another thing we see is the fact that it is a as seen on TV product. That means they are stating that the product that is being advertised will work just as well in reality as it does on television.I feel that Logos is the third supporting factor for this advertisement.

Something that I also mentioned in the Ethos section is Dr. Oz participation in this advertisement. I feel that this belongs in the Logos section for the fact that he is a Doctor. When we see those type of credentials in a advertisement like the one represented here, Our brain tells us that he is a doctor therefore everything he says is true. That is Obviously not the case as we see all the time, That people with certain credentials such as football players and film stars that are not credible in fields outside of there own. There are a couple other things in this advertisement that work on our logical reasoning. One thing that stands out is the fact that the advertisement says that it has a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. When our mind sees this it tells us that it is a wonderful product, and that it works for absolutely everybody. So it will also have a positive result and make a major change in my life and appearance.
Advertising Techniques Used in this Advertisement
The first advertising technique I am going to look at is Endorsement. In this advertisement we see Dr. Oz endorsing the product. When we see a product being endorsed by a celebrity something clicks in our brain that says. If Dr. Oz uses the product ,and it works for him so it must be a great product, and why shouldn't i try it. And because of that it must have extremely positive results. This advertisement style is also trying to get the customers on a band wagon. This product was in stores but not a big seller until Dr. Oz endorsed it, and after that the product could not stay on the shelves, and it became an extremely successful product overnight. Cause and effect is also something present in this advertisement it promises that if you take it you will be more successful, and you will be more accepted by other styles of people such as celebrities. The way this works is if you take this pill you will be happier and your problems will disappear. This advertisement uses the Snob appeal in telling us that we are not good enough the way we are, and this advertisement states that it has the answer to all our physical problems. Also it states it will make us look like a celebrity. This will make us more popular and more appealing to higher class people than if we are overweight.
Going green and living healthy is something that we see here. The way we see this at work is the fact that there is an 100% natural statement in the advertisement that states that the product is pure, therefore making the product much healthier and better to use then a product that is not all natural. It is therefore better on our bodies and the end result is a healthier environment. Using a logo is something else that is present. There are multiple logos in this advertisement. I will start with the as seen on TV logo. The usage of this symbol is stating that this product is just as perfect, and works just as well in television as it does in reality. Another logo I am going to cover is the Dr. Oz show logo in the upper right hand corner. Using this logo is something else that is stating that this product is a stellar product that we all need to use. Logos is the third supporter in this case. This works through the using of company logos. There are multiple logos in this advertisement. Like was mentioned earlier the fact that the as seen on TV logo is present in the advertisement along with the Dr. Oz show, is stating that the products will work just as well as it has been made out to be, through these means of media.
The first and most important technique in this advertisement is the fact that the product is being endorsed by Dr. Oz. This is strongest under Ethos, secondary under Pathos, and lastly under Logos. But this does work on all three parts of the structure mentioned in section one. |
How These appeals are used to construct the primary secondary and third appeals.
Pathos is the dominant factor in this advertisement. I have four different examples to state this fact. The first one that I am going to look at is the bandwagon. This advertisement style is trying to get the customers on a band wagon. This product was in stores but not a big seller, until Dr. Oz endorsed it, and after that the product could not stay on the shelves, and it became an extremely successful product overnight. Cause and effect is also prominent in this advertisement. This product promises that if you take it you will be more successful and you will be more accepted by other styles of people such as celebrities. The way we are told it works is if you take this product you will be a lot happier then if you did not take it. Something else that plays on our emotions is the going green and living healthy effect. The product is made out to be all natural and therefore it is better then a product that is not a completely natural .Also because it is all natural we should use it, and do our part to save the environment. Snob appeal appears in This advertisement and tells us that we are not good enough the way we are and the only way to remedy the problem is by using the product. This will make us more popular and more socially appealing and acceptable then if we are overweight, and did not use this product.
Ethos is the supporting factor in this advertisement, but it is still very important we see this at work through Endorsements. In this advertisement we again look at Dr. Oz endorsing the product. Company's know that the people watching or reading the advertisements will look at the celebrity with the product and automatically assume it is everything it is made out to be. The secondary advertising technique is the going green and living healthy effect. I feel it is stronger under Pathos because it is trying to insert a save the environment context, and secondary under Logos for the fact that it is trying to state logically that if you take the product you will have taken an all natural product.
The third most important advertising technique is the fact that they are using multiple logos in this advertisement. This gets us to think that if a companies stamp of approval is on it, that it must be a good product. This falls under the Logos category first and the Ethos category second. I feel that snob appeal, band wagon and cause and effect fall only under the Pathos category. Because these all work on our emotions and try to get us to buy a product based almost solely on emotions and not through logical reasoning and credibility. |
